A practical guide to preparing your surface and applying Teamac Suregrip® for a durable, textured, slip-resistant finish.
When painting a boat deck, walkway, ramp or other area where additional grip is important, choosing the right coating is only part of the job. Good surface preparation and correct application are essential to achieving a finish that looks good, adheres properly and provides the intended slip-resistant texture.
In this guide, we'll take you through how to paint with Teamac Suregrip® Deck Paint, from preparing the surface through to applying the final coat.

What is Teamac Suregrip® Deck Paint?
Teamac Suregrip® is a pre-aggregated deck coating designed to provide a textured, slip-resistant finish. It is particularly suited to boat decks, but can also be used on suitably prepared wood, metal, concrete and GRP surfaces where a slip-resistant surface is required.
The aggregate is already incorporated into the coating, so there is no need to add a separate anti-slip additive. Once dry, it creates the textured finish that provides additional traction.
Suregrip® is suitable for interior and exterior applications and is designed to withstand exposure to UV and saltwater in marine environments.
Before you start: prepare the surface
As with any painting project, preparation is one of the most important stages.
The surface should be clean, dry, sound and free from grease, dirt, loose material and other contamination. Existing paint should be checked carefully. Any loose or flaking coating needs to be removed, while sound existing paint should be lightly abraded to provide a good key for the new coating.
For bare substrates, the appropriate primer should be used. We recommend suitable priming systems depending on the substrate, for Suregrip® we specifically recommend Marine Primer Undercoat as a suitable primer/topcoat system.
In simple terms:
- Remove dirt, grease and contamination.
- Remove loose or flaking paint.
- Sand or abrade sound existing coatings.
- Make sure the surface is completely dry.
- Prime bare areas with the appropriate primer.
- Allow the primer to dry before applying Suregrip®.
A well-prepared surface gives the coating the best opportunity to adhere properly and perform as intended.
Stir Suregrip® thoroughly
Before application, stir the paint thoroughly by hand.
Suregrip® contains aggregate, which gives the product its textured finish. Our FAQs specifically note that Suregrip should be stirred by hand.
It is also important not to thin Suregrip®, as thinning can affect the slip-resistant properties and may cause the aggregate to become displaced within the coating.
How to apply Teamac Suregrip®
Suregrip® can be applied using a brush or roller.
Work methodically across the surface, applying an even coat and maintaining a consistent texture.
Because Suregrip® contains aggregate, it is important to avoid excessive working of the paint once it has been applied. Aim for an even, consistent finish rather than repeatedly going back over areas that have already started to dry.
Apply two coats
For the recommended finish, two coats of Suregrip® should be applied. The first coat should be allowed to dry fully before the second coat is applied.
Suregrip® gives a typical coverage of approximately 7 m² per litre, although actual coverage will depend on the surface and application.
Allow sufficient drying time
At typical conditions, Suregrip® is touch dry in approximately 6 hours, with around 16 hours recommended before applying the next coat. Full curing can take up to 7 days, depending on conditions.
Don't be tempted to rush the second coat. Allowing adequate drying time helps the first coat develop before another layer is applied.
Temperature, humidity, ventilation and the condition of the substrate can all affect drying times.
For exterior marine painting, we also recommend paying close attention to weather conditions, avoiding condensation and ensuring the substrate is dry before coating.
The finished result
Once cured, Suregrip® provides a textured, aggregated finish designed to give additional slip resistance.
This makes it particularly useful for areas such as:
- Boat decks
- Walkways
- Steps
- Ramps
- Other areas where additional grip is required
The coating is available in a range of colours, including Red, White, Black, Grey, Blue, Green, Yellow and Light Grey, with 1L, 2.5L and 5L sizes available.
Top tips for painting Suregrip®
✔ Prepare properly – Clean, dry and sound surfaces are essential.
✔ Remove loose paint – Don't paint over failing or flaking coatings.
✔ Prime where required – Use the appropriate primer for the substrate.
✔ Stir thoroughly – The aggregate needs to be evenly distributed throughout the paint.
✔ Don't thin the product – Thinning can affect the anti-slip properties.
✔ Use a brush or roller – Suregrip® is designed for these application methods rather than spraying.
✔ Apply two coats – Allow approximately 16 hours between coats under typical conditions.
✔ Give it time to cure – Full hardness can take several days.
Ready to paint?
